The wait is over!
After seemingly endless questions and speculation, the first wave of Collectible Minifigs has finally arrived in Canada! Arguably the most anticipated release from LEGO this season, these 16 little guys & gals don’t disappoint.
The assortment manages not only to fill in some long-standing gaps in the LEGO population/demographic (nurse, clown) but also introduce some truly unexpected new faces (Mexican wrestler, zombie?!).
A couple of them feel a bit redundant, covering ground from even as far back as 20 years, but every fig has at least one unique aspect; if not a new element at least a first-time part-colour combo, and all appear to have new torso, leg, and/or head prints. Not to mention the cool new stand plate included with each Fig (3x4, with 4 studs down the center, black).
So, with their official names and in order from my least to most favourite, here are my thoughts and notes on each of the 16:
#16. DEEP SEA DIVER –The orange is welcome, but otherwise too similar, too soon.
(first orange dive tank. New elements: none)
#15. NINJA – Like the Diver, nothing groundbreaking here, but gold swords are cool.
(extra sword. New elements: none)
#14. FORESTMAN – Hugely nostalgic, but low on the list by redundancy.
(extra plume. plume and hat vary slightly from originals. New elements: none)
#13. SKATER – Glad for the new hair, hope to see that in future sets, but shouldn’t he be wearing a helmet?!
(I wish they had used the 2-clip skateboard instead of the 4-clip. New elements: hair)
#12. COWBOY – Glad to see more Fedora colours trickling in.
(extra revolver. first DkTan Fedora. New elements: none)
#11. TRIBAL HUNTER – Better than the 1997 version; more accurate, more “LEGOy”.
(extra feather. New elements: none)
#10. MAGICIAN – Great torso print, love the wand.
(extra hair/hat option. New elements: 3-long bar)
#9. CAVEMAN – Closest we’ve been offered to a nude Minifig!
(New elements: hair, club)
#8. NURSE – More female Figs! More medical instruments!
(spare needle. New elements: hair, needle)
#7. DEMOLITION DUMMY – Was it the Band or the Toys that forced the name...
(New elements: none)
#6. CLOWN – Who is scarier, him or the zombie? Coulrophobia anyone? I wanna put that horn on a classic car.
(New elements: hair, horn)
#5. CHEERLEADER – “…save the world.” Her facial expression is strangely uncomfortable.
(New elements: pompom(s)
#4. SUPER WRESTLER – Too much fun! Surprising inclusion, after canceling the SpiderMan set for wrestling being too violent.
(New elements: none)
#3. SPACEMAN – Simultaneously current and classic.
(spare visor. first white SP3 helmet. New elements: ray gun, 3-long bar)
#2. ROBOT – Adorable. Bolts, bucket-head and all.
(spare hand. New elements: helmet)
#1. ZOMBIE – Honestly, 1st just for “out of left field” factor.
(drumstick differs slightly. New elements: none)
All and all, a very interesting group of characters!
Putting all 16 of them in order like this was surprisingly difficult. Try it, you will immediately see what I mean!
I would love to see some of these evolve into a line of sets, others seem more reminiscent of themes gone by.
It already looks like these are flying off the shelves. I can really see adult fans wanting an oodle of zombies or robots, but the rest seem fairly satisfying in the 1 or 2 of each range.
The spaceman and the zombie just reek of fan service.
This whole thing takes me back to when Playmobil introduced it's Special Edition figures, although those were not blind-boxed.
I should mention that upon first handling, these Figs feel a bit different. There is some property about the plastic that's not quite right. I have heard them compared to the Chinese-made magnet figures. Since I have none of those I cannot say more, except that if these are the same as magnet Figs, they aren't as bad as everyone seems to say.
Wave 2 has been leaked already, (no spoilers here! If you wanna see, try the usual suspects) and is rumored to become available in greater quantity than this first wave is.
I know I will be on board for another full set of 16...
Play well!
